Below are the pictures she took along with the text she prepared (writing down the names on the memorial).
START DEBORAH'S WORK
In Lika-Senj County, Croatia, there is a town called Jošan, about 6.9 km north
of Udbina. On a AAA map of Croatia, the
main road that runs through the town is Route #1. Google Maps as of 14 January 2015 also shows
that Route #1 runs through the town. Route
#1 is a red route on the AAA map, which means it is the second best maintained
type of road in Croatia. (The best
maintained roads are the freeways.)
Route #1 is the same road that travels to Plitvice Lakes National
Park. On Route #1 in Jošan on the east side, is an old church and
a war memorial.
The information below comes from what was left of the war
memorial in Jošan, Croatia. The photos
were taken on 27 October 2015 by Deborah Butler. Based on these photos, I (Deborah) did my best
to piece together the information about the individuals who died and when.

Deborah, this is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for doing all that!
ReplyDeleteThe reason why there are so many deaths in 1942 is the massacre by the Ustashe that took place in September that year. My grandmother was from this village and she would tell us (with the most painful expression on her face) that they counted some 126 massacred children. They then had to hastily bury everyone during the night, scared that the murderers would see them by day.
Your effort is precious to me, thank you again.
Thanks Matija. I didn't have that history because my direct ancestors emigrated to America in the early 1900s .
