Putting Together a Database of Soldiers from Udbina, Croatia (1821-1868)

In July 2015, Deb and I went to the Croatian State Archives, to search for records in the Austrian-Hungarian military records.

Recall that the Lika province (and thus Udbina and the surrounding villages) was part of the Military frontier.  The people living there were granted a certain amount of privileges and freedoms in exchange for being on-call soldiers for the AH empire.  For this reason, the AH empire drafted the young men in the area into their army and then kept track of them.  The muster rolls have information about these men and provide a wealth of information.

During our visit, Deb and I took pictures of hundreds of documents during the 4 days we were in the archives.  In particular, we took a picture of every document where we found information of a soldier from one of the following villages:

City (Number of Individuals in the Database)
Bukovac (57)
Čojluk (82)
Jošan (657)
Komić (494)
Kurjak (279)
Mogorić (577)
Mutilić (429)
Ondić (169)
Rebić (78)
Srednja Gora (287)
Udbina (355)
Visuć (540)

Over the past year, I have entered the information of the soldiers in those documents into a database (I wanted to collect more than just our family, because we can use this information to provide a snapshot of life for people of the area in that period).  In the end, the database includes information on a little over 4,000 men. (And it is only men unfortunately.)

Over the next few months I will give posts that discuss what I have found.  This will include advice on how to search and use these records for your own research and the results of what we have found! To wet your appetite, below is the list of last names for which we have 10 or more individuals in the database.  If you have family from this area and want me to pass along the records associated with you family, you can email me (Dan) at: kljaicfamilyblog@gmail.com.

  1. Chosich is Ćosić,
    Csenkovich = Crnković https://actacroatica.com/hr/surname/Crnković/
    https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crnkovići
    Jaković = Đaković (Điaković doesn't exist, Jaković is too rare)
    Kermpotich and Kerznarić are Krmpotić and Krznarić
    Knezevich = Knežević
    Popvič = Popović
    Zavodia = Zavođa

    I can't be sure, every surname should be checked. I like your research so I helped you a bit. I live in the area and I'm interested in Krajina history.
