Visiting the Austrian Military Museum in Vienna

As noted in early posts, the family lived in the military-frontier area of the Austro-Hungarian empire and served as part of their military.

The AH empire kept great records and is a great source for family history.  About a year ago I took pictures from the AH records available in the Croatian state archives (Tips for visiting the archive).

Over the next few months I'll post some background information and information about the records we photographed.

For those who have a chance to visit Vienna, the Museum of Military History provides great background information about Austria's military history.  A big portion of Austria's military history includes campaigns in the Balkan and/or campaigns using the soldiers from the region.

The museum is divided by the following sections (or exhibitions):

If you have interest in family history in the region, I highly recommend a visit to this museum!  The museum is fairly large so if you are going there for family history I would move quickly to the relevant portion of the museums and then come back to the other parts if you end up having time (e.g., I would start by skipping The Thirty Years War).

And if you can't make it to Vienna, they have a virtual tour you can take online (but in person is better!).
