The Jovo and Sophia Klaich Family in the 1940 Census

The 1940 census is fun to have.  Among other things the 1940 census included information about education, work and income.  In case you don't know how far $100 would go in 1940, you can use this inflation calculator.

Below I include all of the census forms for the family members in Sophia and Jovo's family.  Here are a few things that I thought were most interesting:

(1) Smiley was the first to graduate from high school.  Here is the educational breakdown for the family:

Jovo - 3 years total of education
Sophia - No education at all
Mary - 6 years total of education  (husband, Daniel finished high school)
Mildred - 8 years total of education (husband, Andrew finished a total of 5 years of education)
Eli - 2 years of high school
   Smiley - Finished high school
Nick - Was currently in college, finished 1 year

(2) It looks like Andrew was the highest paid in the bunch (not that they made much).  Here's how much everyone made

Jovo - $500 (=$8,523 in 2015)
Daniel Jelich (Mary's husband) - $387 (=$6,597 in 2015)
Andrew - $1,680 (=$28,637 in 2015)
Eli - $1,460 (=$24,887 in 2015)
Smiley - $1,185 (=$20,199 in 2015)
Nick - $0, was a full-time student

(3) There are other nice surprises.  For instance, for the form with Mildred and Andrew's family, They included additional questions about their daughter Milley.  Among other things they asked whether she spoke a language other than English at home when they were growing up.  The form says that they spoke Slavonian at home (which of course actually means they spoke Serbian at home).

Now, here are the census records:

Andrew and Mildred Klaich Family in 1940 census
Joseph, Sophia, Eli, and Nick Klaich in 1940 Census
Daniel and Mary Jelich family in 1940 Census
Smiley Klaich in 1940 Census
