Andrew's Brother Jovo (a.k.a. Jovan)

Last year (Fall 2014) Deb conducted an interview with Mira Klaich Pike (Andrew's niece).  In the interview, Mira mentioned that she thought that Andrew's younger brother (Jovo) immigrated to America in 1907.  We struggled to find his record, but we think we have it!

Below is the immigration record.  There are a few things to note.

(1) The name on the record is Jovan Kljaic.  This was part of the difficulty, we were looking for Jovo, but I think that is just the family nickname (and that his full name is Jovan).  Interestingly enough, Jovan is the Serbian version of John (... more on that in a separate post).

(2) He says that his father, who is in Kurjak, is Milan.  That fits with what we know (or it is close enough to Milanko).

(3) He came in 1907 (as Mira recalls) and was 17 when he came.  His boat arrived in October, which means that he was born in either 1889 or 1900.  In this case, I think that he was almost certainly born in 1890 because Andrew was born on December 25 1888.  While it is possible that Stana had Jovo/Jovan sometime in the end of 1989, I hope for her own sake that it was in 1890.

(4) The Kurjak people he's traveling with all have family surnames: Gjukic and Kalanj are common names in Kurjak.

(5) At 5'8" he was two inches shorter than Andrew, though he was only 17 at the time, so perhaps he would overtaken his older brother. His eye color is listed as "gr." so maybe gray or green?  (either way not the typical brown).

(6) He's headed to his friend Bozo Basta who lives in Chicago, IL.

(7) It says he can read and write.  By contrast, Jandre is listed as not being able to read and write when he arrived 2 years earlier.
