Religion by City

Religion has of course played an important role in the region for many years.  With the data from the archives, we can look at the religious identity by city.   In an earlier post, I noted that the database I put together covers the following cities:

City (Number of Individuals in the Database)
Bukovac (57)
Čojluk (82)
Jošan (657)
Komić (494)
Kurjak (279)
Mogorić (577)
Mutilić (429)
Ondić (169)
Rebić (78)
Srednja Gora (287)
Udbina (355)
Visuć (540)

We can also use the information to look at the religious breakdown of the soldiers coming from these cities.  Here's the percentage of soldiers who identified as Catholic (I only use the soldiers for whom we can identify their religion when calculating these percentages):

Percentage of Soldiers who are Catholic
Bukovac - 25%
Čojluk - 0%
Jošan - less than 1%
Komić - 0%
Kurjak - 0%
Mogorić - 0%
Mutilić - 41%
Ondić - 0%
Rebić - 24%
Srednja Gora - less than 1%
Udbina - 92%
Visuć - 3%

So Udbina was a Catholic city surrounded by Orthodox villages.  This fits with the other information we have about the demographics of the area.  Here's a map from a book about the people and customs of the region (Pavičić, Stjepan. 1962. Zbornik Za Narodni Život I Običaje Juženih Slavena. Knjiga 41. Jugoslavenske akademije: Zagreb.):

If you find Udbina it is one-shading (signifying that the majority of the population is Catholic) and then it is surrounded by a different shading for the Orthodox villages around it.
